Hedgehogs are one of our most familiar non-bird garden visitors, although they are seldom seen during the day. A hedgehog may wander through several gardens during the course of one night, feeding on a variety of invertebrates such as slugs, snails, beetles, caterpillars and worms.

One way to encourage hedgehogs to spend more time in YOUR garden is to provide them with a home. The box should be sited in or under thick vegetation, or behind or under a shed, out of direct sunlight and with the entrance facing away from the prevailing wind.

Your box will differ slightly from the one pictured here by having a fully-removable, lift-off lid. For ease of packaging and delivery, the ventialation tube and entrance tunnel will need to be attached upon arrival. The ventilation tube should be glued in place and the entrance tunnel should be nailed and/or glued from inside the box.

A thick layer of dry, dust-free straw and/or leaves should be placed in the bottom of the box.
